Curriculum
Reading: my main objective is to help my students
become better readers, not just for academic purposes, but to also become
familiar with their own preference of genre, authors and illustrators.
Throughout each reading lesson we practice vocabulary, summarizing, decoding,
comprehending, and writing.
Social
Studies: we study United States history
from colonization through present day. I
incorporate current events whenever possible with newspaper articles,
magazines, or projects. Discussion and
hands-on activities, are the major components of this
subject area.
Math: during the course of the year, we review
basic facts and progress into advanced operations. Other areas such as geometry, algebra, and
problem solving are introduced. In the
spring, 5th grade will be taking the PSSA tests. Throughout the year we get prepared to
achieve proficient scores.
Science: all of the three science domains, including
Earth, life, and physical sciences are covered.
On-going experiments help to enhance learning and overall comprehension
of material.
Grammar: the goal of this area is to review and
identify basic parts of speech. Students
will strive to become better speakers, listeners, writers, and spellers. Graphic organizers will be used to improve
writing skills and to help students recognize different purposes of writing,
such as persuasive, narrative, descriptive, or letter writing.
