My name is Susan Burns and I am a first grade teacher at Ashland Elementary Center. I graduated from Bloomsburg University in 1992, with Bachelors of Science degrees in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. This is my ninth year teaching in the North Schuylkill School District. I enjoy teaching and look forward to a fun and exciting year of learning!
I am a firm believer in good communication between home and school. I send a Homework Note at the beginning of each week to inform students and families of our agenda for the week, homework and activities. My email address is listed on this page; please feel free to use this to stay in touch. Homework Helpline is another great way to keep up on what is going on. The numbers for Homework Helpline are 462-3000,889-5200 or 773-2211. My selection number is 7257. The school phone number is listed above.
Homework

Homework in first grade is very
consistent. I only ask that someone at home
reads nightly with your child and checks
over any written homework. I never give
homework on Friday!
Classroom Rules
1. Raise your hand-don’t call out!
2.
Walk in the hall and classroom.
3. Follow directions.
4. Be prepared.
5. Use good manners.

Consequences
Students get a verbal warning upon breaking a classroom rule. After one warning, the student will have
his/her name written on the board and that results in a 5-minute loss of
recess. Within a weeks time any student
who has lost 30 minutes of recess or more cannot participate in our Friday
activity and must spend a recess inside with me. Students who are involved in more serious incidents are referred
to the principal.
I also do an entire class
incentive to promote good behavior on the whole. It is involves marbles.
I will designate a number of marbles ahead of time for each class or
activity and if all rules are followed we place the marbles into a jar. When the jar is full we have a special
treat.
