Procedure
Children that choose not
to follow our classroom and school rules will receive a check each time they
break a rule. After 3 checks they will lose recess time. If the problem
continues I will call the parents. Each day I will stamp your child’s folder if
they did not receive 3 checks. If a student should receive 3 checks I will
write what the off-task behaviors were on their calendar. At the end of the day
students with no checks have a chance of being picked for a special job.
Curriculum

The
Kindergarten children learn Print Awareness through capitalization, punctuation,
and concepts about print.
They learn to decode and spell by learning alphabet
recognition, initial, medial and final consonants, twin consonants, consonant
blends, sounds of “s” and consonant digraphs. They learn to decode by learning
short and long vowels, silent vowels, vowel digraphs and vowel rules. They
learn about r –controlled vowels and other combinations.
Students learn word structure by recognizing non decodable
sight words, blending cvc (consonant vowel consonant) and other words and
possessives.
The handwriting/penmanship is based on capital and lowercase
manuscript letter formation.
We learn comprehension skills, oral communication, journal
writing and co-operative interactive writing into our curriculum.
Students also participate in a Kid Writing program. Each child
keeps a journal. The student begins by illustrating a picture. The teacher sits
with each student to write about their story. We use our phonics rules and kid
crowns to do this. The teacher sounds out each word slowly. The students write
the letters that they here. Next the teacher writes the “grown-up” writing
under and talks about it with the student. A mini lesson with the whole class
follows to teach the class concepts about writing that they can incorporate in
their next writing.
To enhance
your child’s learning your children participate in weekly themes that
incorporate Science, Social Studies, and
We use the Harcourt Math Series. It
provides a research-based instructional plan that insures success for
students. It includes daily strategies
for intervention for problem solving and skills that diagnose student’s
difficulties with Mathematics. This Math provides an opportunity for
differentiated instruction so that all students can succeed. What is learned in
Kindergarten lays the foundation for algebraic concepts which will be built
upon as they progress through their education.
This program is aligned with the State and National Standards and
students are assessed on a regular basis.
It builds a strong school home connection. There is a useful website for parents and
students to explore. www.harcourtschool.com
