Meet the Teacher

Hi! My name is Miss Michelle Smith.  I am a graduate of Ashland Elementary and North Schuylkill Jr. Sr. High School.  I have earned both a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Reading from Bloomsburg University.  I taught Pre-K and Kindergarten for 6 years prior to becoming a substitute teacher for North Schuylkill.  The 2006-2007 school year began my career as a Reading Specialist.  I am working with Title 1 students

in Kindergarten through 4th grade.

Curriculum

As a Title 1 teacher, I go into the classroom and work with the teacher.  On most days we separate the class into two small groups to complete the lesson.  There are times when I work individually with students to become aware of each student’s individual weaknesses.  My goal is to improve the student’s overall reading skills.  When I am in the classroom, the students adhere to the rules already put in place by their teacher.

The Reading Series used for 1st - 4th grade is Collections by Harcourt.  This series has the following features for effective reading instruction:  Literature, Oral Language, Word Identification, Writing, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.  http://www.harcourtschool.com/

In Kindergarten we do Kid Writing.  The students draw a picture and write a sentence to go with it.  The students write their sentence by listening for the sounds in words.  They also use their classroom word wall and Kid Writing crowns to help.  When their sentence is complete an adult will use adult writing to show what the sentence should look like.  http://www.kidwriting.com/
