Program Overview:

The art program at Ashland Elementary seeks to build children's confidence, familiarity and skill in working with a wide variety of materials in many disciplines. Students learn to develop ideas, be creative and practice their own style. They learn about skills and techniques while creatively expressing themselves with a wide range of art materials and resources.

Each student in kindergarten through six has art one forty-five minute period per week. It’s highly recommended that they wear old clothes on that day since we occasionally use materials that may stain clothing.

Basic objectives of the art department are:

·       The child will be provided with opportunities for self-expression through various media.

·       Creating an environment in the classroom that will provide the child’s artistic interests and development.

·       Providing the child with experiences through which they will be made more aware of art fundamentals such as color, form, space and rhythm.

·       Developing in the child the ability to work as an individual as well as a member of a group.

·       Encouraging the child to experiment with various media and techniques.

·       Developing design consciousness within each child.

·       Appreciating sources of inspiration from nature.

·       The child will learn to appreciate various cultures by studying aesthetic works of art.

·       Encouraging the child’s growth in their ability to enjoy art through doing and appreciation.

·       Promoting creativity and sensitivity in the child.

·       The child will be provided with opportunities for individualistic expression and personal enjoyment.

·       Providing experiments in problem solving.

·       Awakening awareness to the visual environment.

·       Developing an awareness and appreciation of artists’ work.

·       Providing experiences which will enable the child to improve personal appearance, in home life, and in surroundings.
