Cheryl Cooper

First Grade

My name is Cheryl Cooper.  I have a B.S. in Elementary Education from Bloomsburg University. I have been teaching at the Frackville Elementary Center for the past 14 years, most of which have been in first grade.  Before I taught first grade, I was an Instructional Support Teacher for the Frackville and Ringtown Centers.

My e-mail address is ccooper@northschuylkill.net.  Please feel free to contact me using it or by calling the Frackville Elementary Center at 874-3661.  Also, my Homework Helpline extension is 7409.

My classroom rules are quite simple.  I expect everyone to respect themselves and others at all times.  Only one person may speak at a time.  Raise your hand if you have a question or if you have something to say to someone.  Always use your manners.

I have an incentive system for good behaviors.  Each child will be given 3 tickets each morning which they will keep for on task work and good behavior.  These tickets will be accumulated to earn rewards in the classroom on a weekly basis.  The children will receive a verbal warning for off task behaviors and will have to give one ticket back if the off task behavior continues.

Everyone deserves recognition for their daily accomplishments and they are more likely to be motivated if they are working toward a goal of their choice.  I will have charts in the classroom stating the ticket value for each reward.  Some examples are 5 tickets to participate in a popcorn party, 10 tickets for 10 minutes of free time.

In addition, we will have a marble jar which will be filled for overall good classroom behavior.  At the start of each new activity I will tell the students the marble value i.e., walking to the library quietly is worth 5 marbles.  When the jar is full we have a party!  A Doritos Party was one of our most popular last year.  Marbles may also be taken out of the jar for off task group behaviors.

You may call me with questions or concerns regarding this or any other matter.  You are always welcome to come to our class to observe, lend a hand or share something interesting.

As for our report cards, first grade has percentage grades for reading, language arts (grammar), math, and spelling.  Science, health, social studies and composition are pass or fail subjects.  Art, music, gym and handwriting are graded as needs improvement (N), satisfactory (S), good (G), and outstanding (O).

Our reading series is Harcourt Collections.  There are 5 basals in the series.  Math is also a Harcourt Company.  There is a copy of each of these books in the Frackville and Ashland public libraries should you ever need to access any information.

The only homework I require for my students is to study vocabulary words, spelling words and review any worksheets from the day each night.
