School Bus Safety Tips for Students
School buses are one of the safest ways for students to travel, but that safety depends on everyone doing their part. Please review these tips with your child each year.
At the Bus Stop
- Arrive at the stop a few minutes early and stand at least 10 feet (about five giant steps) back from the curb while waiting.
- Never run or push near the road. Stay on the sidewalk or grass until the bus comes to a complete stop and the door opens.
- Never play near the road, and put away phones and devices so you can stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
- If you drop something near the bus, never pick it up without first getting the driver's attention. The driver needs to see you before you move near the bus.
Boarding and Riding the Bus
- Board the bus in an orderly manner, use the handrail, and move to your seat promptly.
- Remain seated and face forward while the bus is moving. Standing or leaning into the aisle is dangerous.
- Keep the aisle clear at all times. Backpacks, instruments, and other items should be kept on your lap or stored securely.
- Keep voices at a reasonable level. Loud noise can distract the driver, which puts everyone on the bus at risk.
- Follow all instructions from the bus driver. Drivers have the same authority as a teacher while you are on the bus.
- Never throw any objects inside or out of the bus window.
Getting Off the Bus
- Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before standing up and moving toward the door.
- If you need to cross the street after getting off, walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus so the driver can always see you, then stop at the edge of the bus and wait for the driver to signal that it is safe to cross.
- Never cross behind the bus. The driver cannot see you there, and other drivers may not see you either.
- Look left, right, and left again before crossing, even after the driver signals. Never assume all traffic has stopped.
Pennsylvania School Bus Stopping Law
Under Pennsylvania law, all vehicles traveling in both directions on an undivided roadway must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and the stop arm extended. Drivers may only proceed after the stop arm is retracted and the lights stop flashing. On divided highways separated by a physical barrier, only traffic following the same direction as the bus must stop. Passing a stopped school bus is a serious offense in Pennsylvania and carries significant fines and license suspension.
Reminder for Parents and Motorists: If you witness a vehicle illegally passing a stopped school bus in our district, you can report it to your local police department or contact the school. Protecting our students at the bus stop is a community responsibility.
