Dr. Schmidt graduated from North Schuylkill in 2006 as valedictorian. He earned a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Lebanon Valley College in 2010, followed by a master's degree in Biological and Physical Sciences in 2015 and a PhD in Biophysics in 2017, both from the University of Virginia. His graduate work, focusing on structural biology and early stage drug discovery for a predominantly pediatric form of leukemia, culminated in a publication in the journal Blood Cancer Discovery.

Following graduate school, Dr. Schmidt worked as a Senior Scientist and Assistant Director of R&D at biotech startups in the protein degradation space. After several years in this sector, he took a position as Associate Director of Biophysics at Reaction Biology Corporation, a contract research organization. He has since assumed the role of Director of Biophysics and leads a team of scientists providing biophysical assay services to a variety of industry and academic clients. Dr. Schmidt and his wife, Erin, reside in Collegeville, PA.
