Dr. Robert Mulligan
North Schuylkill Wall of Fame — Inducted June 2021
Dr. Mulligan was a Radiologist, Freelance Trombonist, and Music Arranger. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1944, Penn State University, and Jefferson Medical School in 1951. He graduated in three years from Penn State and was a trombone player in the Blue Band.
Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Mulligan became a resident at The Reading Hospital and was an associate radiologist there until 1981 when he transferred to Ephrata Hospital. He was most proud of his development of the Nuclear Medicine Department at The Reading Hospital.
He was grateful for his ability to have a career that he loved that allowed him to pursue what was in his heart — music. You could always find him playing a gig or with ink and pen in hand writing his arrangements. He mastered the trombone, playing in high school, college, and beyond. His gigs included the Hafer/Jacobson Big Band, The Wyomissing Big Band, The Bobby Mercer Big Band, Trombones Incorporated, Bones of Contention, The Schuylkill County Big Band, The Dave Stahl Big Band, The Dave Stahl Sacred Orchestra, and freelance work for Helen O'Connell, Billy Epstein, Jack Jones, Sammy Kaye, Maynard Ferguson, Al Martino, Ronnie Milsap, and others. He was a supporter and participant in the Berks Jazz Fest, including music education which precipitated the Doc Mulligan Get Jazzed Day. Doc Mulligan was a master arranger with a style and sound all his own. He was undeniably proud of his Ashland and Schuylkill County roots, as they impacted him greatly. He was predeceased by his wife Rose Mary and his daughter Patricia. He is survived by his daughters, Marta Mulligan and Michele Pollock.
